Manzanar Lecture

Introduction into Japanese Internment Camps

Picture
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, many Americans were in fear of the Japanese.  This is understandable seeing as how the Japanese had just killed hundreds of American in an unprovoked attack.

The United States' next action, however, was a failure of morality.  The government placed thousands of Japanese-Americans into "internment camps."  These men, women and children were removed from their homes and placed in poor conditions.

While the camps eventually ended, and resulted in no deaths, it was still a tragic time for the United States.  The "land of free" turned on its own citizens.

These camps are the background to the story "Farewell to Manzanar".  Below are the resources used in class.
