Today (and tomorrow), the junior class is taking some time researching some mobs throughout recent and longer history. Throughout time, mobs have had the power to promote positive social change, wreak havoc, or just serve as a way for people to hang out and have fun. The danger and power of a mob comes from the perceived freedom it offers people. In a mob, or a large group, people feel both invisible and invincible and therefore act free of usual social constraints. Sometimes people truly are invincible in large groups, but often they be scattered as quickly as they formed. Further, not all mobs are physical groups of people marching through the streets. Sometimes they are can exist by simply joining a cause online, or chiming in on a group idea. Mob mentality is like fire. It can be used to sustain life and society if controlled, but can also destroy everything in it's path.
I'll be posting the juniors LessonPaths projects in the next day or two. Let's see exactly what they come up with!
