The only time I don't like America is when I help someone move. I helped a friend move today from her apartment up the hill to a different apartment down the hill. The drive is literally three minutes, and we were able to make several trips quickly. But my goodness, you don't ever realize how much stuff a human owns until you move. Keep in mind, my friend is not opulent, nor is she a hoarder, she's just your average person when it comes to material possessions but still the sheer amount of things she owned, of things that had to be picked up and put down just to move were monumental. It was that moment where I realized "wow, this whole cultural thing is a bit ridiculous if we all need this much stuff just to live in a place". Of course, I also realized just how blessed we are to be able to have so much stuff and think little of it.
So as America gears up to play soccer (for some reason) and America's birthday approaches, be proud of America, even if you're a little ashamed of all your stuff. At least we're free to own it!
