This year's contest is so evenly matched, as an outside observer, it makes me preemptively empathize for the loser. The Super Bowl is an unforgiving contest with little middle ground. If you win, you're the best team that ever lived and if you lose, you're worse the the Jaguars and the Texans. The losers are often so thoroughly and instantly discarded that the Super Bowl appearance becomes a curse rather than a testament to an otherwise stellar season. While I'm inclined not to care when cheering for the Steelers, I think I will feel badly for the team that comes up short this evening.
So enjoy the commercials, eat lots of snacks, stay up later than you should, and you root for your favorites. But when it's all said and done, remember the losers. They had a great year too, and they'll sleep like babies tonight (i.e. wake up every two hours and cry).
As Frank Sinatra once sang: "Here's the losers....bless them all!"
