Work is the same way. As much as we all have dreams of sitting down and making ourselves "work", it doesn't happen, especially not for school work. We can try, but our brains usually resist at first. We check our websites, we go get a drink, we stop and clean the desk...before finally starting to be productive. The only way to get work done is to make conditions ideal, and move towards a state of "work" much as we move towards a state of "sleep".
Why am I bring this up? A) why not? and B) after three months of "moving towards a state of work", I finally sat down all day yesterday and all day today and wrote the last 60 pages of my dissertation. With that, my Ch. 4 and Ch. 5 are now drafted...and the heavy lifting is done! While there's still likely going to be a lengthy revision process over the next couple months, the bulk of the work is now over. I want to say "it wasn't that bad" but I won't for two reasons. Number 1: it's not over yet. I could easily be back here rewriting these things in August and Number 2: my hands still hurt from all the typing. Even so, I'm going to get some ice cream. I'll move towards a state of sleep later.
