While I can't say I was surprised or disappointed (it's a tough question which never really gets a good answer), but it made me realize that English teaching is still missing the mark in a lot of ways. An English class should be answering that primary question "what are we about?" If students can answer it, and defend it, they're pretty much ready for anything. If not...are they really ready for anything? If it's just a matter of plots, lists of stuff we like, and stories, will we able to address bigger issues?
Hopefully there's a break-though soon..and of course, thankfully, there's still a year to go.
