Also, I can't help but wonder if this "new" curriculum is being new just for newness's sake (not sure that's a word, but it works here). We cut short stories, Of Mice and Men, Revolutionary War documents, poetry, and To Kill a Mockingbird while adding The Great Gatsby, In Cold Blood, Catcher in the Rye, and Perks of Being a Wallflower. The new works are (almost) all good choices...but why? Is this big shake-up really changing anything? I feel like in a few years, we'll be asking ourselves the same questions again.
So I'm in a strange situation this year. Rather than being able to work far ahead, I'm forced to work slowly, and behind. Only time will tell how long I last before I just start writing my own new curriculum this year concurrently with the "official" version and worry about merging them later.
