Now, while I think they could have been a little calmer...this is all a good thing. My biggest question is....where, oh where was this attitude for the past 155 school days!? The students all showed their hands today: when it comes down to it, they can actually rise to the occasion, dress up, put on their best front, and present what they know. Do we only get one "best effort" out of them a year? Why can't they bring this kind of firepower all the time?
I suppose it's all about the stakes, the reward, and the alternatives. We can only hold a "graduate project" or "final event" over their heads once or twice before it loses its effectiveness. Still, one has to wonder if we're over-assessing students. Maybe if the focus was put on fewer, larger assignments, we'd be able to replicate a "senior interview" like level of effort throughout the year. Sadly, we're seeing the best...last.
