While I almost always agree with the winning film, as well as half the acting awards, I can always appreciate the group of movies as a body of work. I might dislike one or two, but as a collective they stand as a representative sample of the best of the film industry that year. Except this year. This year...to be honest...I've felt almost nothing towards the nominees. None were especially poor, but none really blew me away. The 8 nominees fell flat compared to my most fun movie of the year (Star Wars), most creative (Steve Jobs), and most well written (Hateful Eight). Perhaps I've simply seen too many movies that I'm no longer impressed by anything...but based on the critics' comments, I feel I'm not alone in this viewpoint.
So while the Oscar bait nominees have ensnared their trap, I can't help but wonder if this year there should be no winner. Just like the Hall of Fame sometimes creates a shortlist and ultimately fails to nominate a single candidate, perhaps this is the year that no one should take home the Academy's top prize. There were lots of good films...but I'm not sure any that were great.
