The dinner tonight will definitely be memorable, but I'll admit I'm not...excited...to meet Neil Walker. I probably wouldn't be excited to meet Ben Roethlisberger, or Andrew McCutchen, or Sidney Crosby either. The whole concept of autographs, photos, handshakes, and personal meetings with players always sounds like an amazing opportunity in theory, but in reality, they're just adults, at work, completing a job. Additionally, I don't like the Pirates, or Steelers because of any of the players...in fact in my mind the players are probably the least important part of the team. When it comes down to it, I'm there's for the logo, the uniform and the Pirates...as a concept, rather than an actual team. The players are the ones that do all the work, true, but I'm not there for them as people. I'm there because, for those three hours, they're choosing to personify the Pirate/Steeler logos and battle the personified logo of the opponent from the rival city. I support them in that moment...but when the game/season ends, the player and the uniform become separate once again.
I'm sure tonight will be a fun experience...but I'm still getting to meet the a real "Pirate". They only exist from 7pm-10pm in Spring/Summer down by the North Shore. I'll have to wait another 12 weeks before I can see the uniforms back in action.
