This morning, I ran my final weekend run (around nine miles) and I'm prepared for an easy week with a couple of 5Ks and a four-mile run mid-week. Otherwise...all my choices regarding my final marathon performance have already been made. At this point, it's just a matter of waiting to see what happens next Sunday. No amount of worrying, lifting, running, training, or eating can significantly change the final results at this point. Only time will tell if I'm going to break set a new PR...or if I'm even going to be able to break four hours again.
Since I teach mainly seniors, I can't help but draw a comparison to the tapering period and the entire senior year. Even though I'm striving to give the students some (slightly) more authentic ways at approaching the content, at this point, most their ability levels have already been set by their effort and choices over the previous twelve years. While I can make a few tweaks, the time for significant shifts is over. My job is to help them taper for the big race coming next year and beyond.
