I've been to a half-dozen girls volleyball matches this year, and while I missed last night's game, I'm thrilled to see that the team has continued their undefeated record into the championship. Despite trailing two games to none, the team bounced back to defeat their district rivals and secure another bid for the WPIAL title. as a result of the continued winning, the Twitterverse is full of well-wishes and retweets, the staff and students all plan to come out in droves for the championship tomorrow and, despite being a niche sport, volleyball is momentarily the only game in town. The bandwagon, as they say, is full.
As a fellow rider of the bandwagon, I can happily say...that that's ok. It's great that volleyball has had loyal fans through the lean times, but a team that's able to attract hundreds of bandwagon fans is one that should be commended as well. While bandwagon fans sometimes are criticized for a lack of loyalty, there's something to be said for the fact that they eventually show up at all. A winning team needs bandwagon fans; they're what makes the final stretch exciting. As long as we bandwagon fans pay deference to the student-athletes, coaches, parents, and long-suffering fans, we're just as welcome at the table as anyone.
