Merging some of the benefits of the 20% Time philosophy I'm trying in English next year, students in CSI will have to identify a problem in their future career field, conduct research and create a paper to address these issues, and then, hopefully, create a product a solve these problems. Some products will be physical objects, others may be seminars or video tutorials, some may be learning guides for future students, and others will be concepts we haven't even considered.
Why are we doing this? Honestly, because so much of school is about doing things that people don't care about, it's about time we started allowing the students to create and work on something for which they are passionate. Too many people, as stated in the TED talk below, will fail to have a great career because they will fail to actually find and follow their passion. While there are many important skills and ideas to be taught in high school, this is one that all too frequently gets left out.
And so now, hopefully, CSI will exist to help students exercise their passion early. Otherwise, many may earn passing grades...but still fail.
