One of the key components to every course is the grade. Students begin class with hope of a 100% and gradually have their perfection chipped away as their mistakes build from assignment to assignment. The old axiom "I don't give grades, you earn them" is not nearly as true as "I don't give grades, I remember your mistakes and then judge you accordingly." Grades made sense for a time, but do they really measure learning?
The short answer is no. This is one of the key points of mastery grading and game practice. By removing a culture of fear from education, perhaps we can return to a culture of respect and collaboration. This year will be a grand experiment indeed..
