What I always enjoy about the talent show is that it brings out the unsung heroes (no pun intended). The athletes wear their uniforms around the school, the musical students aren't hard to pick out a crowd, and the band students have countless football games and concerts to show off their routines. Tonight, though, was about everyone else. I was shocked when I saw a number of my once and future students on stage, normally too quiet to say hello, belting out a song in front of hundreds of people. These are students that have refined their work independently and finally have a chance to show it off. It takes a lot of courage to get up in front of friends, family, and all the other students and declare "this is my talent!" but 22 different acts took on that challenge last night.
The three highest-scored performances were Shaquea with a stand-up comedy routine (continuing her great work from last year), Izzy B (and Zach) with a long awaiting rap/music performance, and Alana with a stunning dance-routine featuring more hulu-hoop action than I've ever seen. I didn't get to record the whole thing, but it's really something to watch. Check it out below!
For those of you that weren't able to see the show, or for those of you fostering a hidden talent, I encourage you to get up there next year. The whole purpose is the surprise talent...hiding in plain sight.
P.S. Is it ever really a talent show without hula-hoops, batons, fire, rapping, people quitting mid-song, awkward jokes, and a song from Wicked? The answer is no. Last night was a true Talent Show.
