But then, suddenly, the AC wasn't on when we entered the building. We had to go clap for the students as they entered the building. First period ran long, and second was short. My website didn't work correctly at first (wrong link on the button), and none of the students had access to their Google Drive accounts, or their new passwords. And of course, I still had to figure out a way to get the kids their seats, agendas, and review some of the rules. Suddenly, all the ideas I had to start the day were out the window and it was simply "go" time.
Let me be clear; today wasn't bad at all. In fact, it was pretty much like most other days at the school. It was about getting everything done. In a few days, I'll have all the front-loaded prep done, the kids will know the process, and we'll have smooth sailing, but for now...as I do every year...I need to remind myself that it's ok to spend some time just laying the foundation before diving in. We had some solid conversations today in my senior class, and my juniors spent a good bit of time doing some self-analysis. It wasn't quite the day I planned...but it wasn't too bad either. And thankfully, just like everyday during the school year, I've got another day tomorrow.
