As we left, however, I was curious about how much we'd changed since 2012, the last "reunion". I scrolled through my phone to find the old pictures and discovered that four years ago...we took the exact same tour and completely forgotten about it. We walked the same path, stopped at the same locations, and took pictures in the same places in 2016 as we'd done in 2012. Our 2016 tour wasn't intended to follow a specific script; we just stopped at places we hadn't seen in a while, and yet by chance or by choice we ended up following the identical pattern. I can't help but wonder if we have another reunion in 2020 if we'll accidentally pursue the same old story.
But I think this ties back to an idea I mentioned a few months ago in literature; people enjoy the same old things. While there's usually a new twist here and there, or a variation on the old theme, the same old story manages to emerge again and again. Just as the new Star Wars movie was completely new...and exactly the same, so our trip around Duquesne was less about discovery and more about replaying the greatest hits. I suppose they're the hits for a reason.
